How do I get a docket number and a copy of a case filed in federal court?

You might get the docket number on this site:

Unless it is a famous case which is online, contact the federal court for info where the case can be viewed. How do I get a docket number and a copy of a case filed in federal court?
Depending on the court, you may find the information on the court's website. Each court is in one or more state-limited district (except for the DC district Court and a few specialized courts). If you enter ';US District Court MA'; for example, you will find the specific court.

Or call the clerk's office. Some courts still use a telephonic information system that may give you the docket number.

Most documents have to be obtained in person or by mail, since there is a fee for copies.

If you know a lawyer who has access to the court's information system, s/he can get the docket number and copies of documents for a small charge. How do I get a docket number and a copy of a case filed in federal court?
if its a current case. go to the court website (www.uscourts.gov lists all) and sign up for pacer-requires a CC, but only cost .08 per page.

Can search by either party, attorney names, date of filing, etc will provide docket number and links to the all filed documents.
Court documents are public records, even federal ones. Go to the court and ask if you can get copies of the records, if you don't know the docket number the court can find it for you but you have to know the names of the parties.

Good Luck

If it is on yourself, you can ask for a copy of such case from the attorney who handled it.
