Dates back to Prohibition when gangsters were being jailed for a number of federal laws (mainly tax and postal laws) they had violated when local law enforcement was being bought off. The meaning is to take an offense somebody thinks they should be allowed to get away with and making it into something they will regret, and by implication you will regret having noticed.What is a federal case?

You can get into federal court three ways:





1. If it is a federal question.


2. If there is diversity of citizenship.


3. If the amount in question is over $250,000.00.
This is when a federal law has been violated. Some of these include interstate commerce laws as well as constitutional issues (violation of the voting act, violation of some part of the 14th amendment, etc). Most drug laws are federal (although they are usually prosecuted at the local level)

That would mean that a Federal law, not a state, county or local law has been violated. Federal cases are generally more serious, they are tried in Federal Courts, prosecuted by Federal Attorneys and the guilty are housed in Federal Prisons.
